Here in Canada when a style is called "French" we tend to assume that it must have migrated from Quebec. And we would be mistaken.
Most of what we know as French Country came as a result of the First World War when those who served in France came home besotted with the warm, romantic aura these homes possess. (A visit to France will do that to you.) It was the style of the country chateaux, derived from the grand mansions of the aristocracy, and adopted in simplified form by the emerging middle class that captured the imagination of our soldiers and they brought it home to construct a uniquely Canadian version. The look lives on where the River Bends. You can see it in the graceful curves and masses of stone. Note how curved window tops and doors gently push through horizontal lines. How very French. That’s our French Country series. |
